BDAC Resource Materials

In addition to the DOE Technical Standard on evaluating doses to biota, the following is a compilation of other resource documents dealing with protection of the environment from the effects of ionizing radiation. Material provided includes: resource documents on dose limits and effects data for setting dose criteria; other dose assessment approaches; additional sources or compilations of environmental parameter data for use in biota dose modeling; and workshop and committee reports dealing with establishing a radiation protection framework for the environment. We hope you find these additional resources useful. Contact the indicated "Point of Contact" for follow-up information or with questions regarding use of the resources. You may also provide feedback via the "Feedback" link at the top of this page.

Title & Description
MS Word Biota Dose Assessment Guidance for the INEEL (September 2003) • This document describes the process employed at the Idaho National Engineering and Environmental Laboratory (INEEL) to incorporate biota dose evaluation using the DOE Graded Approach methodology into site environmental monitoring, dose assessment, and reporting activities. The document describes the approach and results of four tasks: (1) developing site conceptual models and identifying potential exposure pathways to biota; (2) defining evaluation areas for subsequent biota dose evaluation; (3) evaluating current monitoring program sampling locations and media collected; and (4) identifying any data gaps or refinements to the monitoring program that need to be addressed to facilitate future biota dose evaluations. The INEEL document follows and implements the guidance contained in DOE Technical Standard DOE-STD-1153-2002, which can be downloaded from this web site by clicking on the "Technical Standard" button. Contact Randy Morris for additional details on the INEEL implementation of the DOE Graded Approach to biota dose evaluation.

PDF Effects of Ionizing Radiation on Terrestrial Plants and Animals: A Workshop Report (2/26/99) • DOE sponsored a workshop to evaluate the adequacy of current approaches to radiological protection. Workshop participants reviewed and discussed a 1992 International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) report on radiological protection of biota for its adequacy and completeness in answering the following questions: Can DOE use these data and conclusions for promulgating radiological standards for the protection of terrestrial organisms and are the conclusions given in this report still valid or have they been superseded by more recent data?
