Cultural and Natural Resources

Many rich and varied natural and cultural resources are present on Department of Energy (DOE) lands. The Department has an obligation to protect those resources for future generations. DOE lands and waters contain archaeological and historical sites, threatened and endangered species, marine mammals, Native American burial and sacred sites, historic buildings, and wetlands.

Natural Resources

The majority of DOE's 2.4 million acres was used as buffer lands and has been relatively untouched for 50 years. The Department's lands contain diverse ecosystems, geologic settings and natural resources and provide a wide variety of terrain and climate that is home to an abundance of natural resources which include forests, fresh water, or wildlife habitat.
