Radiation Protection

The Atomic Energy Act of 1954, as amended, authorizes DOE to protect the health and safety of the public against radiation. It is the Department's objective to operate its facilities and conduct activities so that radiation exposures to members of the public and the environment are maintained as low as is reasonably achievable (ALARA), within limits established in DOE Order 5400.5, Radiation Protection of the Public and the Environment, and consistent with the requirements of DOE P 441.1, Department of Energy Radiological Health and Safety Policy.

• DOE Site Radiological Programs Self-Assessment Tool (SAT) ("zip" file).
  The DOE SAT was developed by HS-22 in order to assist DOE Sites in self-Evaluating the state of programs related to the Clearance of Materials and Equipment Reuse for Recycle. The Self Assessment tool is an Access database file easy to use that provides a series of questions that will help you assess the program at your facility. The SAT provides you with a direct feedback based on the answers that you provided and what requirements you would need to fulfill and enhance your program. The only requirement to use the SAT is to have the Microsoft(r) "Access 2007" (or later) program installed on your computer. Access is a database program that comes within the Microsoft (r) Office Suite or sold separately and is commonly installed on all DOE computers. If you do not have Microsoft (r) Office or Microsoft(r) Access please call your Office of Information Technology (OIT) for additional support.

    The MARSSIM Steering Committee comprised by members of the DOE, EPA, DoD and the NRC, will be revising the MARSSIM manual. The need for a revision is based on new and best available technology, as well as the implementation of "lessons learned" since the development of MARSSIM. The MARSSIM Steering committee is requesting additional input from MARSSIM users around the country and from the different agencies that will help in the development and refinement for an improved MARSSIM document.
